Big Friendly Killbots

Superstar Nate Thomas and I are always cooking something!

A short post this week (and a significant departure from my usual content about writing and airships).

At the end of last week, my buddy and creative partner Nathan Thomas released a brief trailer for Big Friendly Killbots, a fun techno-thriller about a robot chef accused of murder.

About Nate

As an animator, Nate has an impressive resume, having worked on a range of blockbuster franchises (Star Wars, Transformers, MCU, DCU, Godzilla, etc.). He and I got together when we both worked at Unity and have partnered on a couple fun projects.

Nate now works for Epic.

About BFK

Big Friendly Killbots tells the story of BK, a delightfully engaging robot chef who might also be a psychotic criminal mastermind.

A robot looks at a frying pan.
BK: a robot chef with a heart of gold…and killer recipes.

After Nate presented me with the original idea for BFK, I wrote an early draft of the script. He then turned it into this visually impressive short film using Unreal Engine together with Maya. My own contribution, I’ll say, was relatively modest, but I did help craft the story into its current state.

Eventually, we hope to realize the characters and story on a larger scale.

Sound mixing and music come from the talented Alec Rubay, whose work you might have heard in the Spiderverse movies.

Nate plans to take the full version of the film (which itself is pretty short) on the festival circuit. Some of these festivals insist on showing their selections before they appear online, and thus we can’t show the full thing yet, but even this brief taster gives you a sense of the look, feel, and humor of the finished product.
